What is the problem: On 24 February, Russia with support from Belarus started a massive military invasion of Ukraine, leading to humanitarian, environmental, and potentially nuclear catastrophe in the center of Europe.
About the actual war situation you could follow here: https://kyivindependent.com/ or https://english.nv.ua/
What needs to be done for Russian troops to leave Ukraine immediately?
To achieve this we should (1) strengthen the military capacities of Ukraine and (2) weaken the economic capacities of Russia. The latter is deeply grounded in Russian export of fossil fuels. In 2019, 41% of the EU’s imports of natural gas came from Russia, around 26.9% of all crude oil imports were supplied by Russian companies, as well as 46.7% of the EU’s solid fuel imports.
Thus, we ask you to:
- Demand a total embargo on any Russian energy import to your country. Please, identify companies like Gazprom (here is the petition), Rosneft, Transneft, Surgutneftegas, LukOil, Russian Coal, Karadeniz, SUEK, Kuzbassrazrezugol or others with Russian beneficiaries (or with the use of Russian export) in your country, and demand your government to stop operations of such companies immediately, as well as freezing Russian fossil-fuel assets.
- Use your social media channels and all other means to show your support in public and demand Russian fossil-fuel embargo.
- Go out for the open street actions over the offices of Russian fossil companies and their business partners, show them that paying for Russian fossil fuels is equal to financing Russian bullets and missiles.
Gas and oil are one of the main resources for Russian occupants to finance war and blackmail Europe threatening with growing prices. Now is a perfect time to take that leverage from them, ban Russian energy to weaken the aggressor, and decarbonize your own economies.
