Ecoaction has launched its work within the large-scale international project “Supporting Ukraine in the implementation of the Paris Agreement and Adaptation to the impact of climate change in the Black Sea region (PAABS)”.

The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Ukraine and strengthen the adaptive capacity of communities to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action under the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The project is supported and coordinated by the German government organization Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

In Ukraine, the PAABS project provides comprehensive advisory support for the transition to a low-carbon economy and increased climate resilience. In particular, it supports the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture in the following areas:

  • Aligning national reporting on the implementation of the Paris Agreement with international standards through the introduction of an IT system based on satellite monitoring of land use and forestry;
  • Integrating gender aspects into the adaptation of key economic sectors to climate change;
  • Systematising and disseminating successful adaptation practices in Ukraine and across the Black Sea region.

As a consortium member, Ecoaction is responsible for the development and implementation of pilot adaptation practices created through cooperation between local communities and public authorities to enhance climate resilience. This work includes identifying climate-related challenges faced by communities in the Black Sea region, as well as developing adaptation plans and directly implementing pilot projects on the ground. Particular attention is given to the needs of vulnerable groups, which is essential for strengthening their resilience to climate change impact.

Based on the results and conclusions from the pilot projects, Ecoaction will develop policy recommendations on climate adaptation at the national level and provide support to the relevant ministry in effectively designing and implementing these policies.

The project is led by GIZ in cooperation with national and international organisations working on low-carbon development and climate adaptation:

  • Centre for Environmental Initiatives “Ecoaction”;
  • DiXi Group;
  • NGO “Ecoclub”;
  • Frankfurt School of Finance & Management gGmbH;
  • Institute for Economics and Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
  • Michael-Succow Foundation / Michael Succow Stiftung.
